In short: the EPA often cites about 400 gallons a day for a typical family of four in the U.S. — roughly 100 gallons per person. Families with children usually land a bit lower per person than an all-adult household, since kids typically take shorter showers and use fixtures less on their own. Enter your own family's composition above for a tailored figure.

These are planning estimates from typical per-person and per-appliance assumptions. Your metered bill is the true measure — use it to fine-tune the inputs.

How the estimate is calculated

Family water use is the sum of what each household member typically uses indoors, plus the appliances and outdoor use the whole family shares. Adults, children and infants get different per-person baselines, because younger family members generally shower and bathe more briefly and don't use faucets, toilets, the dishwasher or the laundry machine as independently as adults do:

daily use = (adults × 82 + children × 55 + infants × 35) × efficiency + laundry + dishwasher + outdoor

The 82 / 55 / 35 gallon-per-day figures are standard-fixture planning assumptions built around the EPA/USGS national per-person average of about 82 gallons a day; water-efficient fixtures cut all three by roughly 20%. Monthly and yearly totals scale the daily figure by 30.44 days and 365 days.

Worked example. A family of three — two adults and one school-age child — with standard fixtures, 7 laundry loads and 5 dishwasher cycles a week, comes to about 253 gallons a day — roughly 84.4 gallons per person, or about 7,709 gallons a month and 92,449 gallons a year.

Per-person daily assumptions by age group

These are the baseline figures the calculator applies per family member, before laundry, dishwashing or outdoor use are added.

Assumed indoor water use per person, per day, by age group.
Age groupStandard fixturesWater-efficient fixtures
Adults (18+)82 gal/day≈66 gal/day
Children (5–17)55 gal/day≈44 gal/day
Infants & toddlers (0–4)35 gal/day≈28 gal/day

The adult figure is the EPA/USGS national per-person average. Child and infant figures are planning assumptions, not a measured statistic, reflecting shorter showers/baths and less independent fixture use; adjust the composition above to fit your own household.

How the total scales with family size

Holding fixtures at standard and ignoring appliances and outdoor use for a moment, here's how the per-person baseline alone scales as a household adds all-adult members — useful for sizing a water heater, softener or well pump.

Add typical appliances (about 34 gal/day for standard laundry and dishwasher use) to the 4-person row and the total is about 362 gal/day — in the same range as the EPA's frequently cited estimate of roughly 400 gallons a day for a family of four.

Worked examples

Young family of four

308 gal/day

2 adults + 2 children, standard fixtures, 7 laundry loads and 5 dishwasher cycles a week: 274 gal/day from people, plus 30 gal laundry and 4.3 gal dishwasher — about 77.1 gal per person.

Efficient family of three

180 gal/day

2 adults + 1 infant, water-efficient fixtures, 6 laundry loads and 5 dishwasher cycles a week: 160 gal/day from people, plus 17.1 gal laundry and 2.5 gal dishwasher — about 59.9 gal per person.

Larger family with a yard

383 gal/day

2 adults + 3 children, standard fixtures, 10 laundry loads, 7 dishwasher cycles a week, plus 5 gal/day outdoor watering — about 76.6 gal per person.

What else affects the result

Guests and gatherings. Visitors, sleepovers and holidays temporarily add showers, flushes and laundry that this calculator doesn't account for — treat the estimate as a typical week, not every week.

Diaper laundry. Households with infants in cloth diapers often run extra laundry loads beyond the default; add those loads to the laundry field rather than inflating the infant baseline.

Leaks. A running toilet or dripping faucet can add hundreds of gallons a month without changing anyone's habits. If your bill runs well above this estimate, check fixtures for leaks before assuming the household simply uses more — the water leak cost calculator can help quantify one.

Climate and lot size. Outdoor watering swings the total more than any indoor habit, especially in warm, dry climates during summer months — enter your own seasonal estimate in the outdoor field.

Frequently asked questions

How much water does an average family use per day?

The EPA often cites about 400 gallons a day for a typical family of four in the U.S. — roughly 100 gallons per person. Families with children usually land a bit lower per person than an all-adult household, since children generally take shorter showers and use fixtures less independently.

Why do children and infants use less water than adults in this calculator?

This tool applies lower per-person baselines to children (5–17) and infants and toddlers (0–4) than to adults, reflecting typically shorter showers or baths, less independent faucet and toilet use, and little to no direct use of the dishwasher or laundry machine. These are planning assumptions, not a measured statistic — adjust the composition to match your household.

Does this include outdoor watering?

Yes — there is an optional outdoor & other field for irrigation, car washing, pools and similar uses. Outdoor use varies enormously by climate, season and lot size, so enter your own estimate rather than relying on a default of zero.

How much water can efficient fixtures save a family?

Switching from standard to WaterSense-labeled fixtures cuts indoor per-person use by roughly 20% in this calculator, plus lower-flow washing machine and dishwasher cycles. For a family of four with typical habits, that can mean saving 60–80 gallons a day.

Why is my number different from my water bill?

This tool estimates typical use from the household composition and habits you enter; your bill measures actual metered use, which includes leaks, guests, seasonal outdoor watering, and any fixtures or appliances not accounted for here. Use your bill's total to calibrate the inputs.
